INTRODUCTION TO BICOMPONENT YARNS

Bicomponent yarns describe filament yarns which consist of two different polymers.  Those polymers can be embedded in various ways: for example by the core / sheath combination or side by side as pictured below:

Bicomponent yarns can be arranged by multiple combinations like core-sheath or side-by-side

Thanks to this combination of polymers, bicomponent yarns have the properties of both polymers, enabling them to be applied in a range of applications like adhesion melting. With adhesion melting, the bicomponent yarn has characteristics like different melting points where the outer layer (sheath) has a lower melting temperature than the inner layer (core).
