Pyrethrum
Production, Chemistry, Toxicology, and Uses
For over 160 years, pyrethrum has been
safely and effectively used as a pesticide the world over. The flowers of this daisy,
which contain a mixture of pleasant-smelling esters called the pyrethrins, have highly
unusual insecticidal properties. Unique in their ability to repel most insect pests while
posing virtually no threat to the environment, pyrethrins have been the subject of great
interest to a wide variety of scientists.
John E. Casida, a world-renowned authority on the subject, has assembled a group of
distinguished contributors to discuss topics ranging from the relationship between
pyrethrum and synthetic pyrethroids to cultivation to metabolism to mammalian and
environmental toxicology. Along the way, the history of pyrethrum flowers and pyrethrins,
the chemistry of active pyrethrin ingredients, the mode of action and resistance, the
control of pests, and residues and tolerances are also expertly treated. As safety aspects
of pesticides are reevaluated with regard to current regulatory, social, and political
implications, pyrethrum has increasingly been seen as the prototype for safe, natural
pesticides.
Pyrethrum is the most widely used botanical
insecticide in the World. The active ingredient, pyrethrin, is extracted from the
chrysanthemum plant, Dendranthemum (Chrysanthemum) cinerariaefolium, which is grown
primarily in Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Ecuador.

Most insects are highly susceptible to
pyrethrum at low concentrations. The compound acts rapidly on insects, causing immediate
"knockdown." Flying insects drop almost immediately upon exposure. Pyrethrums
also are highly irritating to insects, so they may be used as a "flushing agent"
or irritant to make them come out of hiding.
Fast knockdown and actual insect death
don't always go hand in hand, as many insects recover after the initial knockdown. For
this reason, pyrethrums are mixed with a synergist such as piperonyl butoxide (PBO) to
increase insect mortality. Pyrethrums are primarily effective as a contact poison. They
affect the central nervous system of insects.
Pyrethrum is nontoxic to most mammals,
making it among the safest insecticides in use. In fact, it has more approved EPA
(Environmental Protection Agency) uses than any other insecticide. One caution: Allergic
skin reactions can be common when using pyrethrum or pyrethrins. Do not use products
containing PBO when temperatures exceed 90 degrees F.

Pyrethroids
Pyrethroids are synthetic materials
designed to imitate natural pyrethrum. Pyrethroids are not accepted by organic producer
regulations. These synthetic materials have the basic chemistry of pyrethrins but are
modified to improve persistence, insecticidal activity, etc. Pyrethroids are widely used
in U.S. agriculture under trade names such as Asana, Capture, Astro, Mavrik, Pounce,
resmethrin and sumithrin. Use caution when applying these products around water -- they
are toxic to fish.

Pyrethrum
& Malaria
Kapi Ltd has been manufacturing Pyrethrum
based insecticides since 1964. Pyrethrum is a 100% natural and environment friendly
insecticide
Pyrethrum is derived from the dried flowers
of Chrysanthemum Cinerariaefolium. The name given to the active insecticidal components of
the dried flowers is "Pyrethrins". Kenya is the largest producer of Pyrethrum in
the world, supplying 90% of the World's demand.
The Pyrethrum flower provides a highly
effective protection against mosquitoes, carriers of killer diseases such as Malaria and
Yellow Fever. The physiological action of pyrethrins is to inhibit the mosquitoes from
biting and causes repellency, immobilization, paralysis and death.
There is no effective vaccine against
Malaria. The only way to avoid it remains avoiding bites. Kapi offers a wide range of
products for comprehensive solutions including Mosquito Coils, Sticks, Chips and
repellents. These products are complementary to mosquito nets in controlling mosquitoes in
the hours between dusk and bedtime, under the net.
Pyrethrum is a complex insecticide with the
following outstanding properties:
- Rapid Action: Pyrethrum is a contact
insecticides attacking the nervous system of insects almost immediately and causing
knockdown, soon followed by kill.
- Low Mammalian Toxicity: No other
insecticide can claim such a long record of proven safety towards humans and warm blooded
animals. It is one of the least toxic of domestic insecticides available and is rapidly
metabolized if accidentally swallowed.
- Lack of Insect Immunity: The
structure of the molecule is so complex that insect resistance to Pyrethrum is not a
practical problem. A very few isolated cases have been reported, unlike synthetic
insecticides.
- Broad Spectrum of Activity: Because
Pyrethrum consists of a group of related compounds, it has a wider spectrum of activity
against insect species than many single insecticides. It can be used against any insect
found in the house or garden: mosquitoes, flies, cockroaches, aphids, ants...
- Environment friendly - Non resistant:
Pyrethrum is degraded by the combination of sunlight and air and therefore presents little
of the hazards which are usually associated with other classes of persistent insecticide.
- Repellency: Pyrethrum is a powerful
insect repellent which in combination with its low mammalian toxicity
favors it in many
applications, such as food and grain storage protection, personal protection (spray-on,
roll-on, mosquito coils). Beside repellency, mosquito coils will inhibit target insects
from biting.
- Flushing Action: Pyrethrum has a much
greater flushing effect than any other insecticide; it disturbs pests in their hiding
places forcing them to get out and to get exposed to the insecticide.
Almost half the world's population lives
today under the threat of Malaria and some 500 million people fall ill with it each year,
making Malaria the most wide-spread of all tropical diseases and one of the most lethal
(World Health Organization). Every 20 seconds someone dies of Malaria - there are over 1.5
million victims each year.

How
safe are mosquito coils?
The growing menace of mosquitoes has forced
people to turn to mosquito repellents in the form of body lotions, creams, coils and mats.
For many families using a mat or lighting a coil is a daily ritual.
According to a study conducted by medical
researchers working at the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), New Delhi, coils and
mats which use synthetic pyrethroids like allethrin, D-allethrin, D-transallethrin,
bioallethrin and esbioallethrin are effective in controlling the mosquito menace and the
fumes emitted by them are toxic for mosquitoes but safe for humans.
Proper use of coils involve a burning
temperature of about 80° C. The smoke from coils deters the mosquitoes from entering the
room, while those inside are expelled or their host finding ability is affected. A
significant proportion of them are knocked down and killed. Mats are heated in an
electrically heated gadget. A mat surface temperature between 80°C and 115° C is ideal.
Toxicological studies at the ICMR indicated
that the allethrin group of chemicals are metabolized in mammals rapidly and there were no
reports of accumulation of these compounds in animal tissues. They are highly
biodegradable and disintegrate in sunlight. There is no chance of their accumulation in
the soil as well as plants. Their restricted use, mostly against mosquitoes and that too
at very low concentrations, results in little or no chance of their residues in food.
However, a chemical used in these mosquito
repellents is a nerve poison. It affects the nervous systems of mosquitoes. Many people
are allergic to the vapors coming out of mats and do not use them.
Research abroad has already established
that prolonged use of mats is harmful for several organs in the human body. It can lead to
corneal damage, shortness of breath, asthma and even damage the liver in the long run.
According to the Consumer Guidance Society of Mumbai, many chemicals used in mats can
affect male as well as female fertility. It is preferable to use screens on windows or
mosquito nets.
Allethrin was produced nearly 36 years ago
in the USA. Over the years, extensive studies have been carried out in countries all over
the world and there is a vast amount of data available on its effectiveness and safety.
Rumors that it causes fever have no scientific basis.
Allethrin is less toxic than caffeine, if
swallowed. A mosquito mat contains only about 40 milligrams of allethrin, which on slow
evaporation gets dispersed in the air with no long-term effects.
Liquid drops sold in the market to make
used mats reusable cannot do so, because the mat made of thick blotting paper loses its
ability to uniformly absorb and release allethrin after its use. The drops may also
contain other toxic chemicals.
The blotting paper used to make mats
contains dioxin, an established cancer causing drug. Traces of dioxin emanate from the mat
in the heating process.
According to Mr. Narendra Wagle, a chemical
technologist and chairman of the Consumer Guidance Society of India, allethrin affects
human beings adversely, but very slowly , and the effect depends upon the weight of the
person. There is no danger for heavy persons but light weight children may be affected. As
of today no one has reported any adverse effects after long and sustained use of mats and
coils daily.
